The Blacktop Gear Hair-On Cowhide Vest is a men's western-style waistcoat in full-grain cowhide with the hair left on in black and white, hand-braided leather edges, adjustable side laces giving 5cm of expansion per side, a four-buckle back and three chrome carbine clasps. Design & Build

Hair-on hide means no two of these are the same. The cow's own black and white markings are left intact rather than shaved and dyed, so the pattern across your back is whatever that particular animal wore. It is the one vest we sell where you cannot preview exactly what arrives, and that is the appeal.

The edges are hand-braided in real leather. Braiding is where cheap vests cut corners: PU cord looks close on day one and starts splitting within a season. Leather braid wears in and darkens with the rest of the vest.

There is no seam through the middle of the back, one uninterrupted panel. On a hair-on hide that matters twice over: the markings run unbroken, and patches sit flat.

Fit is adjustable three ways: side laces give up to 5cm per side, a four-buckle back pulls the shape in, and three chrome carbine clasps close the front. Two zippered outer pockets.

Frequently asked questions

Will my vest look exactly like the photo?
No, and that is the point. The black and white markings are the cow's own, so every vest is different. The cut, size and build are identical; the pattern is not.

What is hair-on hide?
Leather with the animal's coat left on rather than shaved off and dyed. It is the traditional western finish.

Why does hand-braided leather matter?
PU cord braiding looks similar when new and splits within a season. Real leather braid wears in and darkens with the rest of the vest.

How much do the side laces let out?
Up to 5cm per side, so 10cm in total. The four-buckle back adjusts the shape on top of that.

Can I add patches?
Yes. There is no seam through the middle of the back, so patches sit flat on one uninterrupted panel.

How do I care for hair-on leather?
Brush the hair gently in the direction it lies. Keep it dry and let it air after wearing. Do not soak it and do not machine wash. Condition the leather side once a year.

Does the hair shed?
A small amount settles in the first few wears, then it stops. Brushing it out speeds that up.
