Design & Build

The hood comes off. That sounds like a small thing until you ride in one. A hood is genuinely useful when the weather turns, and genuinely in the way the rest of the time. It bunches under a helmet, catches on a rucksack strap, and sits awkwardly against a collar. Most leather puffers make you choose once, at the point of purchase. This one does not.

Off, it is a clean quilted leather jacket you can wear to work. On, it is winter kit.

The shell is soft touch lambskin. On a padded jacket the softness of the hide matters more than it does on a plain one, because a stiff shell fights the loft of the fill underneath and the whole jacket ends up feeling rigid. Lambskin gives with it instead.

Brown or black. Brown is the easier of the two to build an outfit around, black is the one that disappears into everything.

How it is worn

Over a hoodie or a knit, with denim and boots. Hood off, it reads as a plain quilted jacket and goes with most of what you already own. Hood on, it is obviously winter. Brown works with indigo, cream and olive. Black goes with everything and stands out from nothing.

Why lambskin rather than cowhide?
On a padded jacket a stiff hide fights the loft of the fill and the jacket feels rigid. Lambskin is the softest of the common hides, so it moves with the quilting. The trade off is that lambskin is less abrasion resistant than cowhide, so this is a jacket for wearing and riding rather than track use.

How warm is it?
Comfortable through autumn and winter over a knit. With the hood on it handles worse weather.
