The Blacktop Gear Hooded B3 Bomber is a men's aviator jacket in real lambskin leather with a Nappa finish, lined throughout with 15mm faux shearling. It has a hood, which almost no B3 does. Design & Build

The hood is the part worth talking about. A traditional B3 has a big fur collar and nothing above it, which is fine in a cockpit but leaves your head bare on a bike. This one keeps the collar and adds a hood behind it. Put a helmet on, pull the hood over the back of your neck, and the gap that usually lets cold air down your spine is closed.

Under the leather sits 15mm of faux shearling. That is thick. Most padded jackets give you 5 to 8mm of fill and call it warm. At 15mm this is closer to wearing a duvet, which is why it costs what it costs.

The shell is real lambskin with a Nappa finish. Nappa is the softest way to finish a hide, so despite the weight of the lining the jacket does not feel armoured. It moves.

Buckle straps sit under the collar and at the waist. Both were on the wartime originals for a practical reason. The collar strap holds the fur shut across your throat at speed instead of letting it flap open. The waist strap closes the hem so cold air is not forced up inside while you ride. Most modern copies leave both off because they cost money to make.

The zip is heavy duty brass. Two angled hand warmer pockets.

How it is worn

Over a knit, with dark denim and boots. Collar buckled shut when the wind picks up, hood up if it is really cold or wet. Brown is a warm tone so keep the rest of the outfit quiet.

Frequently asked questions

Does a B3 normally have a hood?
No. That is what makes this one unusual. The original pattern has a fur collar and nothing above it, which leaves your head and the back of your neck exposed on a bike.

How thick is 15mm lining really?
Thick. Most padded jackets use 5 to 8mm of fill. At 15mm this is the warmest jacket in our range, and it is noticeably heavier in the hand.

Is the leather real?
Yes. The shell is real lambskin with a Nappa finish. The shearling lining and the fur collar are faux.

Will it be too warm for everyday use?
Probably, if you live somewhere mild. This is built for genuinely cold weather. If you want something you can wear from autumn to spring, our B3 with the removable collar is the better choice.
