Design & Build

Waxed green and waxed purple are the reason to pick this one. Almost nobody makes a riding vest in either. The wax finish gives the colour depth rather than flatness, it sits down into the alligator grain and lifts on the raised parts, so the texture reads even from across a car park. It also darkens and takes on shine at the wear points over time, which plain-dyed leather does not.

Underneath the finish, this is built the same way as our patch vest and for the same reason. No seam down the front, none across the back, and no front pockets, front patches lie flat instead of bridging over a pocket edge. The inside pockets are sewn deeper than normal so their stitching sits below where patches land.

The back hem is rounded by 5cm, which keeps it sitting down when you lean forward instead of catching and riding up. Side zips let the vest out by up to 5cm per side, 10cm total, enough to go from a t-shirt to a hoodie without changing size.

Real cowhide at 1.1-1.2mm, with the surface punched to create the alligator grain.

What does a waxed finish do?
The wax sits down into the grain and lifts on the raised parts, so the texture shows more clearly. It also darkens and takes on shine at the elbows, edges and shoulders over time, which plain-dyed leather does not.

Why are there no front pockets?
So front patches sit completely flat. A pocket edge makes a patch bridge and pucker. The pockets are inside instead, sewn deeper than normal so their stitching stays below where patches land.

Is the front and back really seamless?
Yes, no seam down the front, none across the back. Both panels are clean uninterrupted leather.

How much do the side zips let out?

No. The surface is punched into the hide to create the grain, so it holds its texture rather than wearing off.

How do I care for waxed leather?
Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. Re-wax once or twice a year with a leather wax if you want to keep the depth; leave it alone and it will develop a more worn, matte look.
