Design & Build

Two things separate this vest from the rest of the range. The first is the hide: buffalo natural grain at 1.2-1.3mm, heavier than the 1.1-1.2mm cowhide used across most Blacktop Gear vests. Buffalo has a coarser, more pronounced grain and takes hard wear better, it is the hide to pick if the vest is going to live on the bike rather than in a wardrobe.

The second is the cut. This is a genuine big fit pattern, drafted for big and tall riders rather than a standard vest scaled up. Bigger sizes on a standard pattern go wide without going long, so the vest rides up and the back panel sits short. This one is cut with the length to match the width, which is the difference between a vest that fits and one that just about closes.

Every edge is hand-braided, black and white braid running the full outline, with a white border picked out around the back panel. Braiding by hand takes considerably longer than a bound edge, and at arm's length it is the detail that separates a handmade vest from a factory one.

Four heavy-duty push clips close the front, each with a purpose-built clip holder behind it so the leather does not stretch out around the fitting over time. Side lacing sets the fit. Inside: a soft lining, four pockets with zip and stud closures, and a separate pocket sized for a phone.
